Challenge

The Lead Belly Foundation needed a modern identity and digital presence that honored the musician's legacy while making his story more accessible to contemporary audiences.

The Lead Belly Foundation holds the legacy of one of the most influential figures in American music, but preserving that legacy means more than preserving the past. The challenge was to create an identity and digital presence capable of introducing Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter to new generations without separating him from the history, complexity, and authenticity that make his story significant.

The brand needed to feel contemporary without becoming trendy, archival without feeling static, and flexible enough to support the Foundation as it expanded across digital experiences, merchandise, education, events, and cultural programming.

At its core, the challenge was preservation without stagnation: bringing Lead Belly forward without rewriting him.

Goal

We wanted to modernize the Lead Belly Foundation and create new ways into Lead Belly’s story and legacy.

The identity needed to bridge preservation and discovery by honoring the history, character, and cultural significance of Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter while making his legacy compelling and accessible to contemporary audiences. Every touchpoint, from the visual identity and merchandise to the digital archive, was designed to invite people to explore more deeply.

Ultimately, the goal was to build a platform capable of carrying his legacy forward: not changing the story, but changing how a new generation discovers it.

Result

The House of Leadbelly emerged as a contemporary identity built entirely around the authenticity of its subject.

The new system gives the Foundation a cohesive platform for preserving, presenting, and expanding Lead Belly’s legacy across physical and digital experiences while remaining flexible enough to evolve with the organization.

More importantly, the project creates new points of entry into his story. Audiences can encounter Lead Belly through his music, photography, history, cultural influence, merchandise, exhibitions, or the digital archive, allowing a legacy rooted in the early twentieth century to remain discoverable by generations still to come.

Rather than treating preservation as keeping something unchanged, The House of Leadbelly treats preservation as keeping something alive.
